My dog doesn't like it when I dance

In the dog’s guide to human behavior there must be a chapter on forbidding your pet human from dancing in the front room when she should be a) working or b) throwing a ball. Last week, it was Qigung. I joined a Zoom session with a nice guy in Rancho Santa Fe and as I attempted to follow his graceful stretches and subtle sways, Langston jumped up and bumped me and whined. The teacher — even though I was the only one in class — didn’t mention the sounds and sights of my 85 lb. rescue intruding on what should have been a peaceful session even when he had to raise his voice when the whining got louder and louder. The only good thing about Langston’s intrusion was that I could blame my inability to balance on him. And I have to say exercising indoors on Zoom seems wrong — like hiking in Disneyland.

While I knew that Qigung was off the table, I was kind of surprised when I put on Mindy Adair’s channel on Pandora and Grover Washington’s Soulful Strut started to play. Who can stand still during his slam dunk saxophone? I slid around the front room. Strutted into the dining area. Swept my arms left and right and two-stepped into the kitchen. My dog went wild. Whined. Followed me around like I was an inmate in the Seriously-unstable-may-forget-to-feed-dog mental institution. Put one of his big paws out like a traffic cop. I twirled. That’s the way to start a day. Music not NPR. Dog and me need a new guidebook.
